• Me: I'm watching this really dark movie.
  • Brother: What's it about?
  • Me: A girl's parents were killed in a car crash.
  • Brother: -Swallows-
  • Me: So her sister has to raise her. Only, CPS keeps trying to take the girl away because they think that the sister's unfit to be a guardian.
  • Brother: Wow.
  • Me: And then an alien comes.
  • Brother: What?
  • Me: And other aliens are trying to hunt him. And one of them kidnaps the girl and she almost dies. But then the first alien saves her but then he almost dies. And there's an action-packed chase-scene with a volcano and a gas truck explodes.
  • Brother: What the heck are you watching!?
  • Me: Lilo and Stitch.

We need to talk about Lilo and Stitch.

Not just the first movie but the sequels and the series.

Granted the sequels were hit or miss but the series was fantastic and the overall franchise was pretty impressive and needs to be talked about more as a whole.

So basically to give you the general summary:

Sometime after the first movie, Lilo and Stitch realize that Jumba has made 625+ other experiments. (Which makes sense, seeing as how he called Stitch Experiment 626). The experiments were originally in pod form (little balls with a number on them) and the pods are ultimately scattered around Hawaii. Whenever a pod touches water, the experiment is activated and released. The entire series (which was a great series) focused on Lilo and Stitch going around (with the help of the other characters) to collect and find a new home for all of the experiments. In the final movie, which is set several years later, it’s revealed that they actually succeeded.

Which brings me to the best part of the franchise.

In the first movie, Lilo and Nani’s parents are revealed to have died in a car crash. Hence, their family became “broken”. Throughout the entire movie, Nani is trying to do everything that she can to keep Lilo so that Lilo has a family. In the end, she succeeds. Not only that but Stitch becomes a member of the family. And at the very end, it’s implied that Jumba and Pleakley are a part of the family as well. By the time you hit the first sequel, Jumba and Pleakley are permanent members of the family/household. And then you add all of the experiments, which Stitch affectionately calls his “cousins”. They ultimately rehabilitate and find new homes for all of them which leads to this giant group photo at the bottom. (And yes, Myrtle is in the photo. She really did redeem herself in the franchise.)

And I don’t know, I just think it’s really cool that the Lilo and Stitch franchise starts off with Lilo having a broken family and it ends with Lilo having the largest family in the universe.
